Pittsburgh defenseman Scott Niedermayer became the highest scoring defenseman in OHL history last night with 3 assists against the Detroit Red Wings in a 7-1 victory. The 3 assists give Niedermayer 89 points on the season, 1 better than the previous record held by teammate Nicklas Lidstrom from back in 03/04. Niedermayer ranks second in the OHL in scoring, 6 points behind fellow Penguin Zach Parise, and leads the league in assists with 65. He leads all defensemen in scoring by 13 points ahead of fellow Penguin and defensive partner Sheldon Souray. Pittsburgh captain Nicklas Lidstrom ranks third in scoring among defensemen this season, trailing Souray by 3 points.
